Jamaat warns: 'Another death sentence will lead to prolonged strike'

The Dhaka Times Desk Jamaat-e-Islami's Naib Amir Mujibur Rahman warned, "There will be a prolonged strike if there is another death sentence."

Jamaat-e-Islami Naib Amir Mujibur Rahman has threatened to go on strike for the next week if there is another such verdict in the war crimes tribunal, expressing his anger over the death sentence of Jamaat-e-Islami Amir Matiur Rahman Nizami.

After Nizami, another leader of the party, Mir Kasem Ali, will be sentenced in the war crime case on Sunday. And just before this verdict, he made this threat in a speech at Khaleda Zia's public meeting in Natore on Saturday.

Amir Mujibur Rahman, Naib of Jamaat-e-Islami, said in the public meeting of the 20-party alliance, "There is a conspiracy to kill Jamaat leaders. Professor Ghulam Azam was tortured and martyred in prison. Again, there is a conspiracy to kill our Amir Maulana Matiur Rahman Nizami by unfairly giving him maximum sentence. He said, 'The strike is going on in protest, the strike will continue. We want to make it clear that if there is another such verdict, the strike will continue till Thursday.'

It should be noted that Jamaat-e-Islami has called for a 3-day 72-hour strike after the International Criminal Tribunal sentenced Nizami to death in 1971. Today is the 2nd day of the strike. Again, the judgment of Mir Kashem Ali's case will be delivered on Sunday.
