The United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) officially released the 'United Nations Population Report 2014' yesterday at the National Press Club. This year's theme of the annual report was: '1.8 billion teenagers, the power of youth and the transformation of the future'.

Mentioning that there has been a change in the population structure of Bangladesh, which has created a golden opportunity for economic development, Obaidur Rob, the local director of the Population Council, a US-based population research institute, presented the main content of the report and the situation in Bangladesh. saying In this situation, the number of working people is more than the non-working people. In Bangladesh, the number of people dependent on other people's income has reduced a lot. 2 out of every 3 people earn. He mentioned that this situation will continue for another 30 years.

Obaidur Rob also said that Bangladesh will not be able to benefit much from the 'population dividend' if quality investment is not made for the youth population at this time.

According to this year's report:

India has the largest youth population at 35.6 million
Then 26.9 million in China

Other countries with larger populations aged 10 to 24 include:

Indonesia 6 crore 70 lakh
United States 6 crore 50 million
Pakistan 5 crore 90 lakhs
Bangladesh is followed by 4 crore 76 lakh.

The report provides a number of data on the population and family planning of Bangladesh:

The population of Bangladesh is now 15.85 million
The average life expectancy of men is 70 years
The average life expectancy of women is one year longer than that of men
On the other hand, the total fertility rate in the country is now 2.2
In Bangladesh, 31 percent of deliveries are assisted by trained health workers
170 mothers die for every 100,000 live births
63 percent of women aged 15-49 use some form of birth control.

The report emphasizes investment in youth, which calls for increased investment in institutional capacity building, human resource development, economic activity that increases job opportunities, inclusive governance and human rights protection.

UNFPA representative Argentina Matavel said that Bangladesh is at the center of population discussion in the international arena. Bangladesh has very little land, but Bangladesh's success in population control is remarkable. But despite the success, at least 2 million people are added to the population every year. Youth and youth population is very large in size. The important question now is what kind of education is being provided for them.

The report on the importance of education states that education is very important for young people. The skills and knowledge that the youth will acquire must be relevant or relevant to the current economy. More emphasis should be placed on education enabling them to become innovators, thinkers or problem solvers. The speakers felt that Bangladesh has potential from all sides and emphasized on utilizing it.
