The Sundarbans is in an existential crisis due to oil spillage in the river

The Dhaka Times Desk Sundarbans is in an existential crisis. The crisis has arisen due to tanker sinking and spilling of oil into the river.

A great natural disaster has occurred in the world famous Sundarbans as oil has spread from the Shela River to the Pasur River in the Sundarbans after the tanker sank suddenly. Forest officials said that oil has already spread over 34,000 hectares of Sundarbans. Environmental experts initially feared that this could spell disaster for the world's traditional Sundarbans.

সুন্দরবন বিভাগের খুলনাঞ্চলের বন সংরক্ষক কার্ত্তিক চন্দ্র সরকার সংবাদ মাধ্যমকে বলেছেন, ‘যতদূর ছোখ যায়, শুধু তেল ভাসতে দেখা যাচ্ছে’। শেলা নদীর মৃগমারী, আন্ধারমানিক, হরিণটানা, তাম্বুলবুনিয়া, শুয়ারমারা, জিউধরা, নন্দবালা, ধানসাগর, হারবাড়িয়া, চাঁদপাই স্টেশন কার্যালয়, মরাপশুর, জংড়া, করমজল বন্যপ্রাণী প্রজনন কেন্দ্র, ঢাংমারী, ঘাঘড়ামারী এবং লাউডোব এলাকায় তেল ভাসছে বলে জানান ও্ই বন কর্মকর্তা।

The forest official also said, 'There are many beautiful trees in those areas of Sundarbans. Oil coating was also found on the leaves of trees such as Sundari, Keora, Bain and other shrubs in the forest adjacent to the Shela River. Somewhere the tidal water comes down to the forest land and sticks to the roots of the forest trees. There is a black coating on the ground due to oil spillage at various places along the Shela River.

নিজেদের অভয়াশ্রম হিসেবে খ্যাত শেলা নদীর জয়মনি এলাকায় একটু পর পর ডলফিন লাফিয়ে উঠতে দেখা যেতো। কিন্তু তেল ছড়িয়ে পড়ার পর গত মঙ্গলবার বিকাল আর আর কোনো ডলফিনকে ভেসে উঠতে দেখা যাচ্ছে না বলে জানিয়েছেন স্থানীয় জেলেরা। জেলেরা বলছেন, ‘এই নদীতে তেল ভাসার পর হতেই ডলফিনের কোনো লাফালাফি নেই। তেলের কারণে হয়তো মরে গেছে অথবা দূরে কোথাও সরে গেছে। তবে আরও কয়েকদিন গেলে বিষয়টি পরিষ্কারভাবে বোঝা যাবে।’

শুধু তাই নয়, সুন্দরবন সংলগ্ন বাগেরহাটের মংলা উপজেলার চিলা ইউনিয়নের জয়মনি গ্রামের প্রায় ৩ শতাধিক জেলে পরিবারের কেওই মঙ্গলবারের পর নদীতে মাছ ধরতে নামেননি। ওই এলাকার জেলেরা বলছেন, ‘তেলের কারণে আমরা পানিতে নামতেই পারছি না। নদীতে নামলেই গায়ে এবং জালে তেল জড়িয়ে যাচ্ছে। আমাদের মাছ ধরা এখন পুরোপুরি বন্ধ।’

তেল ছড়িয়ে পড়ায় পরিবেশ বিপর্যয়ের আশঙ্কা প্রকাশ করছেন বিশেষজ্ঞরা। তারা মনে করছেন, ‘এই তেলের কারণে সুন্দরবনের গাছপালা আস্তে আস্তে শুকিয়ে মারা যেতে পারে। সুন্দরবনের নদী-খালে অন্তত তিনশ’ প্রজাতির মাছের বিচরণ রয়েছে। ছোট প্রজাতির কিছু মাছ ইতিমধ্যেই মরতে শুরু করেছে। এসবমধ্যে মাছের মধ্যে রয়েছে নদীর পাঙ্গাস ও পারশে মাছ।’

Meanwhile, the government is trying to get rid of oil. It is reported that attention is being paid to ensure that there is no damage to the Sundarbans due to oil. According to the latest news, the villagers have come forward to remove the oil.
