Fear of complications with the position of the president?

The Dhaka Times Desk After the death of President Md. Zillur Rahman, the appointment of the President within the next 90 days is a constitutional rule. And while following this rule, the current Awami League government has to elect the president. In that case, many are fearing that if the BNP-led alliance comes to power in the upcoming parliamentary elections, there may be complications with the post of president.

Because Article 50 (1) of the Constitution states, the President shall hold office for five years from the date of assumption of office. So unless he is impeached or impeached on serious charges, it is very difficult to remove the President from office. A vote of two-thirds of the members of Parliament is required for impeachment. However, there is no danger of this complication if Awami League comes to power again in the next election. According to Article 123 (2) of the Constitution, elections should be held within 90 days of the vacancy of the office of the President. Accordingly, the President should be elected by June 19. The President is not elected by direct vote, but by the votes of members of Parliament. However, the Election Commission conducts this election with the announcement of the schedule. After Md. Zillur Rahman, who is the president of the country, speculations are going on. The names of two people are heard more in this regard. Advocate Abdul Hamid (Speaker) and Syeda Sajeda Chowdhury, Deputy Leader of the Parliament, currently in charge of the Provisional President.

This complexity is increasing as elections approach

Experts think that Advocate Abdul Hamid (Speaker) and Parliament Deputy Leader Syeda Sajeda Chowdhury, whoever is made President, the closer the next election gets, they may have to fall into various political complications. Even if the country's politics continues to be in a state of conflict, the president may have to do something unpopular like declaring a state of emergency. Again, Awami League will think about making someone the president who can serve for the next eight-nine months before the election and four years after the election (total five years). Although the President does not have any state role in the parliamentary system, the President can play a major role during the election period. Moreover, taking into account the environmental situation of the country, the issue of emergency is also in the hands of the President.

But complications may arise if Awami League loses the next election. In that case, the ruling party will want someone from their party to be the president. But if they don't have a two-thirds majority and fail to impeach or impeach the president, and if the president doesn't resign on his own, the situation is likely to get very messy. However, during the entire rule of Awami League from 1996 to 2001, Justice Shahabuddin Ahmed, who was not the leader of Awami League, was the president.

look back

Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman was the President from 17 April 1971 to 11 January 1972. Although he was imprisoned in Pakistan during the Liberation War, Syed Nazrul Islam served as the interim president. After independence Bangabandhu returned to the country and assumed responsibility as the President. Justice Abu Saeed Chowdhury served as the President from January 12, 1972 to December 23, 1973 after he became the Prime Minister by introducing the parliamentary system in the country. Then Mohammadullah served from 24 December 1973 to 25 January 1975. On that day, Bangabandhu formed Bakshal and again introduced the presidential system of government in the country and he became the president. On August 15, 1975, he was killed by his family. After Bangabandhu was killed in his family on August 15, the then commerce minister Khandaker Mushtaq Ahmad became the president. He was the President till November 6 of that year. That day the National Parliament was dissolved and Justice Abu Sadat. Saim was appointed President. He was in power till April 20, 1976. Although the real power at that time was the military administrator Major General Ziaur Rahman. On 21 April, Justice Sayem was forced to resign as President and Chief Military Administrator Ziaur Rahman himself became President. He became president and chief martial law administrator at the same time. He was the President till 29 May 1981. He was killed in Chittagong Circuit House on 30 May. The following day, Justice Abdus Sattar served as Acting President from 30 May to 19 November and was President from 20 November to 23 March 1982. Hussain Muhammad Ershad seized power on March 24, 1998, and after three days on March 27, appointed AFM Ahsanuddin Chowdhury as president. He was the President till 10 December 1983. Ershad then became the President on 11 December 1983 and remained in power until 6 December 1990. He was forced to hand over power to Justice Shahabuddin Ahmed on 6 December 1990, and Shahabuddin Ahmed served as interim president until 9 October 1991. In other words, no one has been able to finish the term of the President except Ershad. Even though Ershad completed his term, he created many controversies. Abdur Rahman Biswas became the President of the country when BNP formed the government after the 1991 elections and served from October 9, 1991 to October 9, 1996. He was president for a full term. But he died later. Awami League won the '96 elections and Justice Shahabuddin Ahmed was made the President. He also served a full term from 9 October 1996 to 14 November 2001. He is still alive and has not created any controversy during his tenure. In the 2001 elections, the BNP-Jamaat alliance came to power and AQM Badruddoza Chowdhury became the president. He assumed office on 14 November 2001 and was forced to step down as president on 21 June 2002 after a year and a half. Then from 21 June to 5 September 2002, Barrister Zamiruddin Sarkar served as Acting President. None of them could remain president for long. Both are still alive and active in politics. Professor Yazuddin Ahmed was appointed as the President on 6 September of that year and held office till 12 February 2009. After the end of his term, he served as president for two additional years due to the changed situation in the country. He recently passed away. He is blamed for creating situations like one-eleven.

It should be noted that President Md. Zillur Rahman passed away on Wednesday afternoon at Singapore's Mount Elizabeth Hospital four years and one month after assuming office. He is the only person in the history of Bangladesh who died a natural death while president and (except for the death penalty of a hanged convict) did not cause any kind of controversy. Md. Zillur Rahman was sworn in as the president on February 12, 2009 when the Awami League-led grand coalition government was formed in the 2008 parliamentary elections. He died a little over four years after assuming office.
