There are more than twice the capacity of the country's prisons. Some prisons hold three or four times their capacity. Due to the pressure of additional prisoners, the concerned prison authorities are not able to meet the needs of the prisoners. The situation is the same in 67 prisons of the country.


Prisons that normally housed 150 to 200 inmates now have 500 to 700 inmates, piled high. There are 64 prisons in the country's 64 districts and 2 units as an extension of the central prison in Dhaka and the central prison in Gazipur, totaling 67 prisons in the country at present. According to government estimates, the total capacity of prisons in the country is 41907 people. According to the information available from the prisons, the current number of prisoners in the country is 81305 people.

According to sources, Dhaka Central Jail has a capacity of 2682 people, there are 7721 people incarcerated there. Built as an extension of the Central Jail, Kashimpur Jail Unit 2 in Gazipur has a capacity of 2,000 and holds 2,442 inmates. Kashimpur High Security Jail has a capacity of 1,020 people and holds 1,804 prisoners. The number of prisoners in Narayanganj district jail with a capacity of 220 people is now 1294. Rajshahi Jail has a capacity of 1600, currently there are 2512 people. Natore District Jail has a capacity of 220 with 720 inmates. Chapai Nawabganj prison has a capacity of 153, and there are 772 prisoners. The capacity of Pabna District Jail is 571, there are 1186 prisoners. The capacity of Sirajganj jail is 200, but 1587 people are kept. The capacity of Bogra District Jail is 708, the current number of prisoners in that jail is 1762. Naogaon district jail has a capacity of 200, there are 1158 prisoners. Jaipurhat Jail has a capacity of 131 people but now there are 600 prisoners. Gaibandha District Jail has a capacity of 400, and 581 people are incarcerated here. Rangpur district jail has a capacity of 8500, now there are 13800 prisoners. There are 1250 prisoners in Dinajpur's 650 capacity jail. Kurigram jail has a capacity of 200 people, there are 399 prisoners. Panchagarh District Jail has a capacity of 200 people and 240 people are incarcerated. Lalmonir Hat District Jail has a capacity of 200, there are currently 710 inmates. Patuakhali district jail capacity is 278, there are 405 prisoners. Jhalkathi District Jail has a capacity of 155, there are 203 prisoners there. There are 464 prisoners in Pirojpur District Jail against the capacity of 140.
