He said that the first article written in Bengali language was published in the open encyclopedia Wikipedia 10 years ago. Bangla Wikipedia started its journey through that article titled 'Bangladesh'. 26 February 2015 was the 10th anniversary of Bangla Wikipedia. At present, the number of articles in Bengali on Wikipedia is about 35 thousand. On the other hand, the registered users are about 80 thousand. The number of unregistered users is now countless. And in terms of usage, Wikipedia's co-founder Jimmy Wells, who is visiting Bangladesh, said that Bengali language is in the third position.
Jimmy Wales, the co-founder of Wikipedia, highlighted these facts in a seminar at the Radisson Hotel in the capital that day and said that Wikipedia was established with the idea that all the knowledge of human history becomes accessible to every person in the world. Every opportunity should be taken to remove barriers to knowledge acquisition such as affordability, language or lack of human-relevant content.' He said, 'I am happy to be a part of Bangla Wikipedia's 10 year anniversary celebration.' He welcomed the efforts of Bangla Wikipedia, Grameenphone and Wikimedia Bangladesh to open the door of knowledge for all.
Munir Hasan, president of Wikimedia Bangladesh, said on the occasion, 'For 10 years, all the wonderful articles have been published in Bangla Wikipedia. So it can be said to be an important repository for the people of Bangladesh. Our goal is to increase the amount of writing. Every day thousands of young people are being encouraged to write new essays.
At the event, Grameenphone Chief Marketing Officer Alan Bong said that they are working with Wikipedia to create more content in Bengali. All Wikimedia mobile sites are free for Grameenphone customers. Note that Wikipedia launched Banglalink for the first time in Zero.
In the event, prizes were distributed to the winners of the content development competition organized nationwide by Wikimedia Bangladesh and Grameenphone, a mobile phone service provider.
According to Grameenphone, the number of Internet users in Bangladesh has increased significantly recently. In 2009, the number of internet users in Bangladesh was 6 lakh 17 thousand. At the end of 2014, this number stood at 4 crore 27 lakh 60 thousand.
