The so-called priest explained to them that before the world is destroyed, they must remove themselves from everything. It is a remote village in West Khasi Parbat district of Meghalaya.
The alleged priest convinced the local tribal families that the destruction of the world was imminent. So now one should keep oneself away from all worldly matters. With such words of the pastor, the families are convinced that one by one they have removed themselves from their jobs or activities. They don't even send children to school. Again, he withdrew the money deposited in the bank and left it at home. Many try to explain that it is blind faith. But they don't want to understand anything.
Metbah Lyngdo, an MLA in the Moirang area where the village is located, said the families believed that the world was about to end. And so now they have no interest in anything in the world. Someone disguised as a priest misled these families. It is assumed that there may be some vested interests behind it. However, these families are not only confined to their homes, but also go to their farming land or talk to others in the village.
But one thing is that they refuse to take any kind of worldly help or advice from anyone. They do not take the food grains of the public distribution system, and have even destroyed their voter ID cards. They don't even go to church again.
West Khasi Parbat district administrator S Kharlingdo admitted the incident to the BBC. However, he also said that the government has not taken any action in this regard.
MLA Metbah Lyngdo also said that he had met a member of these families, trying to convince many that it was blind faith. But they don't want to understand anything. They are very stubborn about their beliefs. It seems that some time needs to be given to these families. Maybe one day they will realize their mistake and then they will come back to normal life.
