Haji Shahbaz Mosque

The picture you are looking at is the historic Haji Shahbaz Mosque in Dhaka. This mosque is located in Suhrawardy Udyan in Dhaka, adjacent to the shrine of the three leaders, it is also called 'Red Mosque'.

The mosque is located in the southeast corner of the capital's Suhrawardy Udyan and the eastern end of the Mazarlagoa of Three Leaders in a quiet, secluded environment.

About 450 years ago, the Sufi saint and rich businessman Hazrat Haji Khawaja Shahbaz chose that place to build a mosque. This mosque, known by his name, still stands as a witness of time. There are many legends about this beautiful mosque. Some call it Masjid of Jinn, also known as Jora Masjid to some. There is a legend that Khwaja Shahbaz came from Tongi and used to pray in this mosque with Jinns. That is why it is named Jin Mosque. It is said that Khwaja Shahbaz built a shrine for himself next to the mosque. The structure of the shrine is similar to that of a mosque. That is why it is also known as Jora Mosque. Again, because the color of the wall is red, the mosque is also known as 'Red Mosque'.

A large signboard next to the mosque reads, 'Hazrat Haji Khawaja Shahbaz, a rich businessman and eminent Sufi saint of Dhaka, built this mosque and his shrine in 1086 AH while he was still alive.' Accordingly, the mosque was built in 1679 during the reign of Mughal Subedar Muhammad Azam.

The 3-domed mosque is 68 feet long and 26 feet wide, built in the architectural style of the Shaista Khan period. Its pulpit and platform are made of black stone. Khwaja Shahbaz was buried in the courtyard of the mosque. His mausoleum is better known as Khwaja Shahbaz's Dargah. There are four octagonal minarets at the four corners of this mosque. There are three entrances in the eastern wall. There is one door each in the south and north walls. Due to the humidity of the climate in the region, the walls were covered with stone to increase the durability of the mosque. Each door frame is made of black stone. The inner west wall has three interesting arches. The decoration of the main arch is very beautiful. Adjacent to the mosque is the shrine of Haji Khwaja Shahbaz Sharif - a domed building. The architectural design of the mosque is similar to Musa Khan Mosque or Lalbagh Fort Mosque.
