The Dhaka Times Desk Today is World Safer Workplace Day. Every year, 2 million workers worldwide die in workplace accidents. Another 1.2 million workers were injured and unemployed. In addition, more than 16 crore workers were affected by occupational diseases. This was stated by the International Labor Organization (ILO).
In Bangladesh, the number of injured and killed in occupational accidents is increasing day by day. This number has tripled in the last one century. The death of more than three hundred workers in the latest Savar building collapse proves that.
In this situation, 'World Safe Workplace Day' is being celebrated on Sunday, every year the day is celebrated all over the world to commemorate the killed and injured workers. This year the theme of the day is 'Prevention of Occupational Diseases'. As part of the international campaign to ensure a safe, healthy and dignified working environment, the day is being celebrated with importance in our country like many countries around the world.
On the occasion of the day, 'Bangladesh Institute of Labor Studies-Bills' organized a press conference at Bills Seminar Hall in Dhanmondi on Saturday morning. Two research reports on 'Fire Protection, Institutional Failures and Remedies in Garment Factories of Bangladesh' and workers affected by occupational diseases in different regions of Bangladesh were published.

In the press conference, the concern about the collapse of Rana Plaza and the fire at Tazrin Garments a few days ago expressed concern that the number of deaths due to occupational accidents and diseases in the country is increasing day by day. However, for this, political decisions, increasing administrative capacity and protecting and developing the national industry are essential, the speakers said.
