According to media reports, the security chief was fired after a couple recently posted a video of guards chasing them on social media. This is a change in the policy of the previous government of Sri Lanka. Under the policy under the previous government, police patrolled to prevent lovers from kissing in public.

Deputy Foreign Minister Harsha de Silva said he saw security guards chasing unmarried couples away while visiting the Independence Square monument on Sunday. He also spoke to Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe. He issued an order to fire the director in charge of security. De Silva added, 'The head of the guard has been fired.'
