Khairamatha Switchora: A beautiful bird

The picture you are looking at is a hawk-headed switchora bird. This bird is very nice to see. This bird was once seen all over Bangladesh, but now it is rarely seen.

This bird is called Khoiramatha Switchora or Patkile-Matha Switchora bird. Its scientific name: Merops leschenaulti English name: Chestnut-headed Bee-eater.

It is a species of small bird in the genus Merops belonging to the family Meropidae. This bird is called the local bird of Bangladesh. But it is rare to see them. This bird is found in Dhaka, Chittagong, Khulna and Sylhet regions of Bangladesh. I. U. C. N. This species has been declared as Least Concern. This bird is also considered as Least Concern in Bangladesh. This species is protected under the Wildlife Act of Bangladesh.

This hawk-headed swichora bird is 18 to 20 cm long. Their body color is mainly green. However, the forehead, crown of the head, back of the neck, lower face and ears are bright brown. Back of body, fins and tail dull shiny blue. The outer part of the middle tail feather is again blue and the inner part is green. The face, throat and chin of this bird are yellow. Lips are black and legs are grayish black. Females and males look alike, but juveniles are somewhat duller in appearance.
