The Dhaka Times Desk People's Democratic Party (PDP) leader Mehbooba Mufti is the first woman Chief Minister of Indian state of Jammu and Kashmir.
Mehbooba Mufti was sworn in as the Chief Minister of the PDP-BJP coalition government on Monday. News agency ANI gave this information. Governor NN Vora administered oath to Mehbooba Mufti. Other ministers of Mehbooba government also took oath.
Union Minister for Parliamentary Affairs Venkaiah Naidu, Minister of State for Prime Minister's Office Jitendra Singh and many others were present at the swearing-in ceremony.
When the PDP-BJP coalition government chief minister Mufti Muhammad Saeed died last January, Mufti's daughter Mehbooba refused to take oath as chief minister. At that time Governor's rule was imposed in the state without dissolving the assembly. Since then, the stalemate began in the state.
It is known that the reason for this is that Mehbooba had a strong objection to forming a government in alliance with the BJP. However, Mehbooba could not oppose the wishes and demands of her late father.
Mehbooba Mufti claims that the promises made at the central level during the formation of the coalition government have not been implemented. It is not possible for him to form a government if he does not get the commitment of the central government on these promises.
After Mufti's death, Mehbooba realized that PDP's popularity has decreased due to joining hands with BJP. That's why he started struggling to form the government. The ice finally melted after a meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi last month.
