It is known that the Earth Observatory has been established in Dhaka University for joint research with Columbia University in the United States. Professor Humayun Akhtar has been researching earthquake trends since 2003. His research model says that Bangladesh is located at the junction of 3 moving plates: Indian, Eurasian and Burma. He said that strong earthquake energy has accumulated in the geological structure on both sides of Bangladesh.
Professor Humayun Akhtar said, 'One is in the north-eastern corner of the Dauki fault in the Sylhet region, and the other is in the Paharia region in the Chittagong Tripura belt to our east. Here two major earthquakes are at the very doorstep of our Bangladesh. At the north end, which is the Dawkey fault, the rate of contraction is 1 meter per 100 years. We have no record of major earthquakes in the last 500 to 600 years. That means it has the power to deflect 5/6 meters. If I express it on the Richter scale, it has the potential to produce an earthquake of magnitude 7.5 to 8. Dhaka city is 150 km from here.
Professor Humayun Akhtar said that Dhaka does not have the geological conditions to cause a major earthquake, but if there is a strong earthquake in Sylhet and Chittagong, the capital Dhaka will be severely damaged.
