Breaking news: Bangladeshi youth commits suicide in Australian asylum camp

The Dhaka Times Desk A young Bangladeshi man committed suicide in an Australian refugee camp in the Pacific island nation of Nauru, according to media reports.

According to a report by the international media Reuters, Rakib Naman, a 26-year-old Bangladeshi youth, committed suicide by taking sleeping pills.

Reuters cited an organization working on refugee rights as the source of the news in its report. The report also stated that the Australian authorities refused to give any statement on this matter. Nauru authorities have not commented.

Notably, this is the second death among asylum seekers on Nauru in a few weeks with Rakib. Earlier on May 3, a 23-year-old Iranian youth committed suicide by setting himself on fire as part of a protest at a refugee camp in Nauru. A few weeks before that, a 21-year-old Somali woman set herself on fire. Although the woman survived, her condition is still critical.
