Baitul Mukarram National Mosque was inaugurated on January 25, 1963. On that day Friday prayers started in this mosque with Friday prayers. In the same year (1963), Taraweeh prayers started in this mosque on January 26.
The first Khatib of Baitul Mukarram Mosque was Maulana Abdur Rahman Bekhud (Rah:) in 1963.
Then Khatib performed the duties of:
Qari Maulana Osman Madani (1963-64)
Mufti Syed Muhammad Aminul Ihsan (1964-74)
Mufti Maulana Muiz (1974-84)
Maulana Ubaidul Haque (1984-2009).
After that Maulana Nur Uddin served as Acting Khatib for one year. Since January 5, 2009, Baitul Mukarram Mosque has been in charge of Government Madrasa-e-Alia, Dhaka, the eminent Aleme Deen Professor Maulana Md. Salah Uddin. To increase the beauty of the mosque, the government recently built a high entrance and a high minaret on the south side.
Dhaka is called the city of mosques. Among the thousands of mosques in Dhaka, one of the most interesting mosques is the Baitul Mukarram National Mosque.
According to history, Abdul Latif Bawani was the famous industrialist of that time in 1959. He expressed his desire to build a mosque named Baitul Mukarram to Major General Umrao Khan, the military ruler of East Pakistan. Umrao Khan also assured the government's cooperation in building the mosque. On April 27, 1959, a meeting was held at Abdul Latif Bawani's house to build a mosque. GA was present in this meeting. Madani, Haji Abdul Latif Bawani, M.H. Adamji, S. Sattar, Muhammad Sadiq, A.Z.N Rezai Karim and Major Umrao Khan.
In that meeting it was decided that Baitul Mukarram Mosque will be constructed by filling Paltan Pond. When the pond was filled, on January 27, 1960, the President of Pakistan Field Marshal Ayub Khan laid the foundation stone of this mosque. Baitul Mukarram Mosque was designed by engineer Abul Hossain Thariani. Engineer Moinul Hossain supervised the construction work. The government allotted 8.30 acres of land for this 60 thousand square feet mosque.
Baitul Mukarram Mosque is mainly 8 floors. There are shops and warehouses on the ground floor. First to 6th floor building or building. This mosque also has a separate place for women to pray. Area 6,382 sq.ft. In total, including the mosque balcony, the worshipers use an area of 1 lakh 25 thousand 62 square feet in Baitul Mukarram mosque for prayers.
