The operation of the country's first wireless phone CityCell has been stopped

The Dhaka Times Desk Finally, the country's first wireless phone, CityCell, was closed. BTRC suspended its operations today due to non-payment of dues.

Today (Thursday) afternoon, a delegation led by BTRC Chairman Shahjahan Mahmood visited CityCell head office at Mohakhali and sealed the CityCell office.

Bangladesh's first mobile phone operator, CityCell, owes 150 million taka to the government.

BTRC announced the closure of CityCell's operations last July due to non-payment. They were given notice the following month.

After that notice, if Citycell went to court, the Appellate Division gave Citycell 2 months to continue the proceedings subject to payment of money. The order of the court was passed on August 29.

According to BTRC sources, this decision to close was taken as two-thirds of the total dues were not paid on time yesterday. That amount is owed to CityCell towards wave allotment and renewal fee, revenue sharing, annual wave fee, social security fund, annual license fee, value added tax (MUSC) and late fee of 2G licence.
