Elephant races and football competitions are organized in this 5-day long festival. Besides, there were horse cart and bullock cart competitions. There was also a 300m elephant race. About 20,000 people including local and foreign tourists came to enjoy it.
Elephant festival coordinator Pandey said, 'This elephant festival will play an important role in attracting tourists. Nepal's tourism industry collapsed after the 2015 earthquake. So this special initiative has been taken to attract travelers.
A visitor to the festival said, I enjoyed watching the elephant ball game. It was really nice to see the elephants playing with the ball. The ball is going out of bounds, I am having a lot of fun here.
Nepal's Culture, Tourism and Civil Aviation Minister Bahadur Shahi said that such festivals have been playing an important role in attracting foreign tourists. After the earthquake, our tourism business suffered a severe downturn, so we are working to encourage tourists to come here again.
However, despite the success of the festival, animal rights activists have been accusing the mahouts of controlling the elephants. However, dismissing these allegations, the organizers said that the method of controlling elephants is not harmful at all.
