The Dhaka Times Desk IPL 2013 Rajasthan Royals player Sreesanth and two other teammates, Ankit Chabon and Ajit Chandila, were arrested by the Delhi Police on charges of match-fixing last Thursday.. This is the first public statement from Sreesanth after his arrest. He has pleaded not guilty.
After their arrest, Sreesanth, Ankit Chabon and Ajit Chandila were charged in a Delhi court for breach of contract or breach of trust under Section 409 of the Indian Penal Code, which is a non-bailable offence. After the arrest, the police remanded Sreesanth as per the orders of the Delhi court. Yesterday, the court ordered to take him to police remand for another five days.
In an email sent to the media by Sreesanth's lawyer Rebecca John, Sreesanth said, “I am innocent and I have not committed any crime. I was never involved in any kind of spot fixing. I have complete faith in our justice system and am confident that one day I will be vindicated and my honor and dignity restored.”
In his hearing, the police told the court that they were analyzing recorded conversations between players and bookies. Voice samples of the accused were also taken to match them. Additional Public Prosecutor Rajiv Mohan also told the magistrate that more new names have come out in this investigation and detailed information about them will be presented in the court on Wednesday i.e. today. Sreesanth's lawyer, however, opposed the police remand application saying that there is no justification for further remand. The police have been interrogating each accused one by one for the past few days and have learned everything they can.
Meanwhile, according to PTI sources, the government organization Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited has suspended Sreesanth from his job.
