The Dhaka Times Desk Mahbooba Nasreen Kalpana, vice-principal of Udayan Higher Secondary School located on the campus of Dhaka University, cut off half of the sleeves of the school dresses of half a hundred female students, accusing them of indiscipline. He even threatened to cut the clothes up to the waist later.
The school's prospectus states that students should wear half-sleeved shirts during summer. But, the prospectus does not say anything about whether female students can come in full sleeves or not, or if there is any penalty for appearing in full sleeves. However, on March 14, a notice said that all students should attend classes in the prescribed uniform. But even then, several students appear in class wearing full sleeves.
Yesterday Wednesday around 10 am, Vice-Principal of Udayan School Mahbooba Nasreen Kalpana along with some teachers went to the classrooms of classes 9, 10, 11 and 12. At that time, he cut the sleeves of all the students whose sleeves were big in front of everyone present in the class. The students begged the vice-principal Kalpana and said, "Ma'am, it is our religious practice, so we have veiled." However, in view of their words, the vice-principal replied, "Not the screen, the school rules first." Not only that, he also said, “I just cut my sleeves in half today. After that, if someone wears a quarter sleeve or full sleeve shirt, I will cut off the sleeve up to the armpit."
Meanwhile, the principal of the school. Umm Salema Begum admitted the truth of the incident and said, "On my orders, the sleeves of the girls' clothes were cut off. He said, "Earlier I have forbidden them many times not to come to school wearing full sleeves." But they didn't agree. So the vice-principal cut the flower sleeves (in half) with scissors. He also said that according to the school rules, everyone should come to school wearing a dress. Outside of this will not be accepted. However, if someone wears a full-sleeved shirt and hijab because of the veil, it must be reported in writing.
This incident has caused intense anger among the affected students and parents. Students' parents protested on the campus because the sleeves of the school dress of the girls were cut off. The parent Abdul Aleem Mia said that the school authorities did this without giving any kind of notice or instructions. Such an arbitrary decision cannot be accepted. Students may wear hijab or full sleeves for religious reasons. Such clothes are not banned in Bangladesh.
Parents also said that many students were injured while cutting their sleeves. Many students panicked in this incident. Due to this incident they got scared and cried. Many are mentally broken.
Meanwhile, it has been found that Mahbooba Nasreen Kalpana is the wife of Labor and Employment Minister Rajiuddin Ahmed Raju. Some members of the governing body of the school said that Kalpana is behaving like she is going to school because she is the wife of an influential minister. And when he protested his behavior, he showed various threats.
Since this incident, the parents have taken a position in the school premises demanding the punishment of the principal and vice-principal. According to them, we are demanding the resignation of the principal and vice-principal of the school. On the other hand, when we tried to contact Mahbooba Nasreen Kalpana in this regard since yesterday afternoon, her phone was found to be switched off.
