The Dhaka Times Desk Can hands ever get this big? Even in the wilderness of the desert! Such a monstrous hand was seen in the desert! What is the secret? find out
At a glance, this hand might seem like you've stepped into a futuristic movie set. But actually it is not, this hand is absolutely true.!
Chile's Atacama Desert is one of the driest regions in the world. A monstrous hand will suddenly be seen in the wilderness of this desert. A hand rising up from the desert sand as if telling you to stop. At first glance, you may feel as if you have entered a futuristic movie set.
'Mano del Desierto' or 'Hand of the Desert' is actually a 36 feet tall sculpture. It was created in 1992 by the famous Chilean sculptor Mario Irrajabal. As wacky as it may seem, Errazabal never really intended to scare anyone or create a surprise. He created this sculpture entirely out of a philosophical thought.
Irrajabal may have made this hand to show the smallness of man to the universe. In the directionless wilderness of the desert, this hand is telling people about their impermanence, what is their helpless position in front of nature. Also it calls to stop injustice and loneliness and even torture! Looking at this huge sculpture, one might think that it is made of desert sand.
But it rests on a massive iron structure. The artist Irrajabal also took measures so that the desert weather could not harm this sculpture.
Today this sculpture 'Hand of the Desert' is considered as one of the wonders of the world. A large number of tourists flock to see this sculpture at any time of the year. The sculpture is located on the Pan-American Highway from the nearby city of Antofagasta.
Notably, artist Irrajabal created another hand named 'La Mano'. It is 10 years older than the desert hand, i.e. the hand he made just 10 years earlier. It is installed off the coast of Punta del Este, Chile. It is also a famous work of art.
