According to media reports, South Korea's defense minister has said that they have reached an agreement with the US on the regular deployment of US 'strategic assets' in the country. The agreement was mentioned as part of countering the North Korean threat, according to news reports. The term 'strategic assets' refers to nuclear-capable US B-52, B-2, and B-1B bombers, F-35 fighter jets, and aircraft carriers stationed at US bases in South Korea, Japan and Guam.
The announcement was made during a media briefing on the two countries' biennial defense dialogue, or KIDD, held in Washington, according to media reports.
On the other hand, Seoul and Washington have claimed at this time that the sophisticated missile defense system 'Third' has been deployed in South Korea for mere defense. However, opposing the deployment of the 'Third', Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Geng Shuang said it would destroy the regional strategic balance.
