High Court's order suspended: Gas prices are increasing from June 1

The Dhaka Times Desk The order passed by the High Court suspending the decision to determine the new price of gas, which will come into effect in the second phase from June 1, has been suspended. That is why gas prices are increasing from June 1.

Chamber Justice Syed Mahmud Hossain gave this order after hearing an application made by the Energy Regulatory Commission (BERC) today (Tuesday).

With stay order, the application was sent to the regular bench of the Appellate Division for hearing on June 5. That is why the new price is effective from June 1 - said the concerned lawyers.

On February 23, BERC announced a two-step increase in gas prices. Accordingly, the price has increased in the first phase on March 1. In the second phase, the prices were supposed to increase from June 1.

As per the BERC order, Rs 900 for one stove and Rs 950 for two stoves have been fixed from June. For residential customers who have meters, Rs 11.20 per cubic meter will be charged from June.

It should be noted that the former president of Bangladesh Institute of Architects and city planner Architect Mobashwer Hossain filed a writ in the High Court on February 27, challenging the validity of the new gas price hike decision. Later, on February 28, the High Court suspended the decision to fix the new price of gas, which will be effective from June 1, for 6 months.
