The Dhaka Times Desk New York, the fourth most populous state in the United States, has set the minimum age for marriage at 17 by revising the old law. Previously, the law allowed marriage at the age of 14.
According to media reports, Democratic Governor Andrew Cuomo signed the new law. As a result, the legal age for marriage in the state is no longer 14 years. Now it has been made 18 years. However, if one wishes to marry at the age of 17, he must obtain the approval of his guardian and a judge.
Andrew Suomo said, 'This is an important step in our efforts to protect children and prevent forced marriage and I am really proud to sign this new law. Child marriage stopped in New York because of this law.'
It should be noted that due to the old law in this city, more than 3800 children were married in New York in the 10 years from 2000 to 2010.
