By giving status, sharing news, like, commenting and debating various tasks, they have kept it in this virtual space of social communication! But most of the actives are interested in various online and daily news. About 88 gigabytes of the country's total bandwidth usage (436 gigabytes) is behind Facebook. This figure has emerged from the Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Authority (BTRC), an internet service provider organization.
Currently, a large number of people in Bangladesh are connected to the Internet. According to the latest data provided by the Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Authority (BTRC), the number of internet subscribers in the country is more than 73.3 million till June this year. The data mentions that most of them are connected to the Internet only to use Facebook.
A survey by social media research institutes 'We Are Social' and 'Hoot Sweet' also shows that Dhaka ranks second among the world's top cities in terms of Facebook usage. More than 22 million people are actively using Facebook in Dhaka.
This number, published last April, may be as high as 2.9 million today. On the other hand, Internet World Stats reports that as of June 30, 2016, the number of Facebook users in Bangladesh was 2.1 million. At that time the number of internet users in Bangladesh was 6 crore 72 lakh 45 thousand. According to BTRC data, currently the number of Internet users in Bangladesh is 733 million.
However, whether there has been any research on what people in Bangladesh actually do on Facebook, or any specific information on this matter has not been found. However, Bangladesh Open Source Network (BDOSN) General Secretary Munir Hasan Sahiyogi told the media in a personal opinion that only 2 percent of the country's total Facebook users are active. Due to his long work with free software, he is watching the issue very closely.
He said that only 2 percent of Facebook users are actively using Facebook. Their number in all may be like 5 lakhs. They comment on Facebook, debate on a topic, share again. Among them are people associated with newspapers, online activists, marketers too.
Munir Hasan also told the media that 25 percent of users are fairly active on Facebook. They log on to Facebook at least once a week on average. They are active on any special festival or birthday. They are happy to get some likes and comments around their birthday. On the other hand, 30 percent of users do nothing at all on Facebook. Many of them have to open ID on Facebook to protect their honor, so they opened it. Many of them forget that they have a Facebook ID, and many even forget the Facebook password and can't open it anymore!
On the other hand, 40 to 43 percent of Facebook users are completely silent. About them, the general secretary of BDOSN said, they enter Facebook but do nothing, they just look at it. Do not like or comment on anything. Sometimes you may open a link and see this. They log in, which is why his impression is visible.' He also said, 'That is why it is difficult to understand the trend of Facebook users in Bangladesh.'
