The island, located in the Venetian lagoon of northern Italy, is reportedly off-limits to the public. The country's government has banned people from visiting here. Fishermen have also been banned from fishing.

This is because human bones are often found in fishermen's nets. The reason given is that plague patients were brought here to be killed.

Then when the number of patients increased, about 160,000 sick people were cremated here. A mental hospital was built here in 1922. But after a few years it was also closed.
