According to media reports, an Italian man with HIV has been sentenced to 24 years in prison for spreading the virus.
The man intentionally infected 30 women with HIV through sexual intercourse. The 33-year-old man has been identified as Valentino Talluto. He is an accountant by profession.
Ever since he found out he was HIV-positive 10 years ago, he has been seducing women over the Internet, meeting them and then having sex. His aim was to infect women with HIV.
He said that after he was diagnosed with HIV in 2006, he had sexual relations with 53 women, one of whom was 14 years old.
Talluto's lawyer said his client's behavior was 'immature' but not 'intentional'.
Four other men contracted HIV after having sex with the women who contracted HIV after having sex with Talluto. One of these women's child is also infected with HIV.
Talluto's mother died of HIV infection when he was 4 years old. He told the court that he would not have had a real relationship with a woman if he had wanted to intentionally infect her with HIV.
He told the court, “Many girls know about my family and friends. They say, I wanted to spread HIV infection in the body of more women. If that were true, then I could have very casual sex in a bar without getting into a real relationship with them.”
Local media said Talluto was crying when the verdict was announced. The court sentenced him to 24 years in prison, instead of giving him a life sentence as the public prosecutors sought.
