Jail Day and related issues

The Dhaka Times Desk The nation is observing Jail Murder Day today on November 3. This day was the second shameful chapter after the killing of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and his family on August 15, 1975.

One of the brave soldiers of the liberation war of 1971 and the four national leaders Syed Nazrul Islam, Tajuddin Ahmad, AHM Kamaruzzaman and Captain M. Mansoor Ali was brutally murdered on this day inside the Dhaka Central Jail on Nazimuddin Road in Old Dhaka. After killing Bangabandhu and his family on August 15, 1975, these four national leaders were arrested and sent to the Central Jail. The day after this brutal and barbaric incident, the then Inspector General DIG Prisons Kazi Abdul Awal filed a murder case at Lalbagh police station.

Today, the nation is commemorating this dark chapter in the history of Bangladesh by paying due respect to one of the brave soldiers and four national leaders of the Liberation War. This sad day is being celebrated all over the country with the initiative of various organizations including Awami League.

President Md. Abdul Hamid and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina gave separate messages on the occasion of Jail Killing Day. In the statement, they paid deep respect to the memory of the four martyred national leaders.

Awami League has taken various programs on the occasion of this Jail Killing Day. The programs are half-masting of national and party flags, holding of black badges and hoisting of black flags at Bangabandhu Bhavan and the party's central office at branch offices across the country at 6 am. Gathering at Bangabandhu Bhavan at 7 am and placing wreaths at the portrait of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. In the morning, wreath laying, Fateha recitation, Milad mahfil and prayer at the graves of national leaders at Banani graveyard. Similarly, wreath laying, Fateha recitation, Milad Mahfil and prayer at the grave of national leader Shaheed Kamruzzaman in Rajshahi. A memorial service will be held today at 3 pm at Krishibid Institution Auditorium. Prime Minister and Awami League President Sheikh Hasina will preside over this memorial meeting. Also, these four national leaders will be duly honored through various programs throughout the day.
