UN says: Myanmar leader Suu Kyi to be charged with genocide

The Dhaka Times Desk Zeid Ra'ad al-Hussein, head of the United Nations Human Rights Commission, said Myanmar's leader Suu Kyi will be charged with genocide in Rakhine.

The head of the United Nations Human Rights Commission, Zeid Ra'ad al-Hussein, said Myanmar's leaders involved in the massacre of Rohingya Muslims in Rakhine state should be brought to justice.

He also said that he is not completely ruling out the possibility that Myanmar's leaders and military officers will be charged with genocide if brought to justice. Others, including the country's leader Aung San Suu Kyi, will be charged with genocide.

Ra'd al-Hossein said these things in an interview given to the British media BBC. BBC Bangla published his interview on Monday.

In the interview, Ra'd Al-Hussein also said that due to the scale of the military operation in Myanmar, there is a question of decision making on the matter at a higher level.

The UN official said that the level of attack by the Myanmar military on the Rohingya Muslims is unthinkable and planned. He has personally called Myanmar's leader Aung San Suu Kyi to stop such killings and persecution of the Rohingya population, but to no avail.

Ra'd al-Hussein said, "You can't rule out the possibility that there was a massacre there because of the events that happened." Genocide has been described as the crime of all crimes by the UN human rights chief.

It should be noted that Myanmar's radical Buddhist terrorists and the military operations of the country have killed thousands of people. About 1 million Rohingyas have taken refuge in Bangladesh, unable to survive in the face of killing and persecution.
