Mass graves in Rakhine: Myanmar army begins investigation

Myanmar's military has launched an investigation after a mass grave was discovered in northern Rakhine. Myanmar's army chief, General Min Aung Hlaing, said in a statement posted on his Facebook page that the unidentified bodies were found in a cemetery in a village in Maungdu. It is one of the most violent areas.

However, there is no word on how many bodies are there and from which community they belong. The statement also said that strict legal action would be taken against anyone in the security forces if they were involved.

It should be noted that last week, the health care charity Doctors Without Borders said that at least 6,700 Rohingya were killed in the first month of violence after the army launched an operation against suspected Islamic militants in Myanmar last August. However, the Myanmar army has always denied any atrocities. They say they only targeted members of the militant group Arakan Rohingya Salvation Army.
