The Dhaka Times Desk There has been a recent rise in rape cases in China, particularly in Beijing, where women are sexually harassed on public transport. For this reason, Beijing police have ordered girls to refrain from traveling in indecent clothes while on buses or subways.
In recent times, the problem of rape has become evident in different countries of the world. The recent story of India has made the whole world think. Not only in India but also in China, this problem has become evident. Beijing police and the public transport authority jointly issued some guidelines for girls, according to a report published in China Daily, China's official daily. It said girls should avoid any indecent clothing like mini-skirts while using public transport. It is also advised to inform the police immediately if you are a victim of sexual harassment. It also said that girls should travel standing on the lower floor of the bus instead of sitting on the upper floor to avoid becoming the target of inappropriate photos. And they should cover their bodies with bags, magazines and newspapers.
On the other hand, if anyone is caught red-handed during such harassment, 15 days of punishment has been prescribed.
However, critics are skeptical about the effectiveness of such remedies. Jiang Yu, a law professor at Xiamen University, said issuing a police warning would not eradicate the problem. According to him, the transport authorities should broadcast warnings on buses and subways. As passengers travel with money, it is the responsibility of the transport authorities to ensure their safety. He advocated comprehensive legislation to prevent sexual harassment.
It is to be noted that recently there are many complaints of taking pictures with mobile phones in buses and subways and forcibly hugging. That is why new guidelines have been issued to prevent sexual harassment in public transport.
Incidentally, it should be noted that in the wake of the recent bus rape incident in India, one of the states ordered girls to wear hijab (veil).
