The Dhaka Times Desk A US diplomat has resigned due to doubts about Myanmar leader Suu Kyi's sincerity in solving the Rohingya crisis. The name of this US diplomat is Bill Richardson.

US diplomat Bill Richardson has resigned from the international advisory panel formed to advise Myanmar's leader Aung San Suu Kyi on resolving the Rohingya crisis.

It is reported that Richardson, a member of the International Advisory Panel, has questioned the panel's role in resolving the Rohingya crisis and Aung San Suu Kyi's 'will', according to a BBC report. Questioning the role of this panel, he referred to it as 'people show'.

Richardson was invited by the Myanmar government to join the panel. There has been no response from the Myanmar government since Richardson's resignation.

Bill Richardson complained that the plight of the Rohingyas was not discussed in earnest. He also criticized Aung San Suu Kyi's role.

The veteran diplomat, who once served in the Clinton administration, also said Suu Kyi's "leadership lacks ethics" in resolving the Rohingya crisis.

Bill Richardson, in an interview given to the news agency Reuters, said that during a meeting on Monday, he had an argument with Suu Kyi.

In that meeting on Monday, Bill Richardson questioned the detention of two Reuters journalists who were detained in Myanmar while reporting on the Rohingya issue.

Suu Kyi became 'furious' when she brought up the matter and clarified that it was 'not the job of the advisory board' to talk about it.

Although this panel is only in name, Bill Richardson pointed out that the main purpose is to please or entertain the government of that country without doing any work.

He resigned because, in Bill Richardson's words, he would no longer act as a 'cheer-leading squad' for the government.

The Myanmar government formed this international advisory board last year at the initiative of Aung San Suu Kyi. Its purpose was to implement recommendations for the stabilization of Rakhine State. 5 members of this 10-member advisory board are foreign members.

About 650,000 Rohingya have fled to Bangladesh to escape the ongoing persecution in Myanmar's Rakhine State. The UN has repeatedly described the atrocities in Myanmar as 'a classic example of ethnic cleansing'.
