Former Secretary Kazi Rakib was appointed as Chief Election Commissioner

Dhaka Times Report. Even before the end of the term of the Election Commission, there was a storm of discussion and criticism everywhere in Bangladesh. Especially the big political party BNP has the biggest headache about who will be the Chief Election Commissioner. Because the national elections are less than two years away. And so BNP is very concerned about the formation of Election Commission. The President is asked to hold a dialogue with all the major or medium-sized political parties of the country so that no one can say anything about the formation of the Election Commission by the present government. Accordingly, President Md. Zillur Rahman held a meeting with political parties including BNP and formed a search committee based on the views of the parties. President Md. Zillur Rahman has appointed former secretary Kazi Rakibuddin Ahmed as the new chief election commissioner on the recommendation of the search committee.
Kazi Rakibuddin Ahmed became the 11th Chief Election Commissioner of the country. At the same time, the President appointed four more Election Commissioners. They are former Additional Secretary Mohammad Abu Hafeez, former Joint Secretary Mohammad Abdul Mubarak, retired Brigadier General Md Javed Ali and retired District and Sessions Judge Md Shahnewaz. It has been gazetted immediately after this appointment. (Today February 9) New Chief Election Commissioner and three commissioners may be sworn in. Chief Justice Md. Mozammel Hossain will administer their oath. The new Chief Election Commissioner and other commissioners were appointed for five years.
On the other hand, the main opposition party BNP has rejected the appointment of the new Chief Election Commissioner and four commissioners, saying that the process by which new Election Commissioners including the Chief Election Commissioner have been appointed is unconstitutional and illegal. BNP will not participate in any election under this commission.
Newly appointed Chief Election Commissioner Kazi Rakibuddin Ahmed told reporters at his Baridhara residence that it is a national responsibility. I am ready to take any challenge in fulfilling it. He did not comment on BNP's rejection.
It should be noted that Kazi Raqib Sadyavidayi Chief Election Commissioner Dr. ATM replaced Shamsul Huda. He retired on February 4.
