BTRC chairman said that if you want to use Facebook on the internet, you have to spend a certain amount of money. The Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC) is planning to set a price for the use of this social media. BTRC chairman Shahjahan Mahmud announced his plan at an event in the capital on Sunday.

In a discussion program titled 'Role of Telecommunication Sector in Transition from Underdeveloped Countries to Developing Countries', he said that BTRC has a plan to set different prices for using different media on the Internet to prevent social media addiction of the young generation.

He also said that it is undeniable that the internet has now reached everyone's hands through mobile phones. But the sad thing is, practically the young generation does not seem to be very creative in browsing the Internet on mobile phones.

He also said, 'Today I have seen the younger generation using maximum for chatting on Facebook. It's not creative use.'

The excessive addiction of young people to the Internet, especially through social media like Facebook, has become a headache even in the developed countries of the world. It is also being blamed for many ailments in the younger generation, from depression to poor sleep.

Shahjahan Mahmud termed the use of social media as 'digital opium' and said it has become like an addiction to 'digital cocaine'. The younger generation these days, once they get into Facebook, they don't want to leave.

Commenting that a 'social revolution' is needed to overcome this situation, the BTRC chairman mentioned taking some steps on behalf of his organization.

BTRC chairman said, I will propose soon so that any arrangement can be made for creative use on the Internet. A special rate can be given for using Facebook, and if creative use can be done, then another type of rate can be given. Then maybe the youth will try to acquire knowledge without using Facebook.

Post, Telecommunication and Information Technology Minister Mostafa Jabbar was present as the chief guest in the event, Secretary of Telecommunication Department Shyam Sundar Sikdar and others were special guests.
