Rizoan Merchant, famous as a criminal lawyer, was busy with his family on the second floor of Altaf Mansion last Monday night. He and his eldest son Fayaz returned to Mumbai that day after spending summer vacation. But suddenly the Altaf Mansion in Mumbai collapsed Merchant lost three members of his family forever.
Rizwan Merchant recovered the bodies of his mother Tahira (78), wife Asifa (50) and his youngest son Faraz (13) from the wreckage on Tuesday morning. Ten people were killed and six injured in the building collapse. Four of the six injured have been hospitalized and the remaining two have been treated and released.
According to the merchant, Faraz repeatedly called him till midnight to tell him that he was still alive but the rescuers could not locate Faraz and ultimately failed to save Faraz.
According to Mohan Atani, Additional Municipal Commissioner of the Municipal Corporation, Monday's heavy rains or illegal construction of weak structures without complying with building codes could be the cause of the collapse.
It is known, about two years ago BMC (Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation) called by the merchant regarding a show room on the ground floor of this building, due to which he requested some changes in the construction process of the building so as to keep the building free from any risk of collapse or any accident. But there was no avail in this regard despite complaining, as a result he had to lose his loved ones due to the collapse of the building.
It should be noted that Rizwan Merchant has been involved in various legal activities throughout his life, but he is best known for fighting cases on behalf of Sanjay Dutt. He works to prove that Sanjay was not involved in the 1993 bombings. He also managed to free the actor's flat house.
