Why do thousands of farmers in Gujarat want voluntary death?

The Dhaka Times Desk About 5 thousand farmers of Bhavnagar district of Gujarat, the home area of India's Prime Minister Narendra Modi, have applied to President Ram Nath Kovind for permission to euthanize!

It is known that the state-owned power company is carrying out the process of encroaching about 400 bighas of farming land of those farmers, and the farmers of the area want to take self-immolation in protest.

It is known that the land of 12 villages of Ghogha area of Gujarat was acquired by the government about 20 years ago. However, the farmers said that the compensation given at that time was much less than the current market price. The farmers have claimed that taking possession of the land after so many years of acquisition is illegal.

বোডি গ্রামের বাসিন্দা, কৃষক নরেন্দ্র সিং গোহিল সংবাদ মাধ্যম বিবিসিকে বলেন, “১৯৯৭ সালে সরকার যখন জমি অধিগ্রহণ করেছিল, তখন মাত্র ৪০ হাজার টাকা করে দেওয়া হয়েছিল। ওই সময় তারা জমির দখল নেয়নি। এতো বছর পর সেই জমি ছেড়ে দিতে বলা হচ্ছে।” কৃষক নরেন্দ্র সিং গোহিলের কথায় জমির দাম এখন বিঘাপ্রতি প্রায় ২১ লক্ষ টাকা। অথচ ৪০ হাজার টাকা দিয়ে সরকার জমি নিয়ে নেবে, এটা কোনো যুক্তি হতে পারে না!

তবে সরকার বলছে একবার যে জমির জন্য ক্ষতিপূরণ দেওয়া হয়ে গেছে, অধিগ্রহণের সব আনুষ্ঠানিকতাও সম্পূর্ণ হয়েছে, তারজন্য নতুন করে ক্ষতিপূরণ দেওয়া সম্ভব না। উপ-মুখ্যমন্ত্রী নীতিন প্যাটেল জানিয়েছেন, “কৃষকদের ১৯৯৭ সালে ক্ষতিপূরণ দেওয়া হয়। একই জমির জন্য তারা যদি নতুন দাম চায়, সেটা তো দেওয়া সম্ভব হবে না।”

Farmers are on the move. They say that they can give the land, but the government will have to fix the new price and pay the compensation.
