"I apologize to the Muslim community for my Islamophobic comments," Republican MP Lauren Bobert said on Friday. I went to MP Ilhan Omar's office and directly spoke to him about this. I told him - we have more important things to discuss without debating these unnecessary issues.
A section of Republican MPs, including Lorraine Boebert, better known as a loyal supporter of former US President Donald Trump, is known to often abuse and insult their congressional colleagues. Bobert is serving for the first time after being elected.
A recent video showed Boebert getting into an elevator at an event in his native Colorado to find Ilhan Omar already there. Then he said, well! He doesn't have a backpack, we should be fine. He also said, This is not my first 'Jihad Squad' moment.
By the backpack, Boebert originally meant suicide bombers. He commented that Ilhan Omar is a jihadi squad because he is a Muslim.
Following the incident, Ilhan Omar tweeted that anti-Muslim bigotry is not funny and should not be allowed to become normal. Also calling me a suicide bomber is no laughing matter.
He later reported the matter to Congress Republican Leader Kevin McCarthy and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and urged them to take appropriate action.
