The Dhaka Times Desk Today is April 17, the historic Mujibnagar Day. During the liberation war in 1971, on this day, the first provisional government of independent Bangladesh was officially sworn in at Amrakanan of Baidyanathtala village in Meherpur.
Later this Baidyanathtala was named as historical Mujibnagar. Before that, the independent sovereign government of Bangladesh was formed on April 10. Following that, the Provisional Government took oath on April 17 at Baidyanathtala.
Then on April 11, Bangladesh Prime Minister Tajuddin Ahmed gave a radio address to the countrymen. His speech was broadcast several times from Akashbani in Kolkata. In the speech, he also gave details of the war of resistance conducted across the country. Apart from that, the swearing-in date of the cabinet on April 17 was also fixed that day.
It is through Tajuddin's speech that the people of the country and abroad can know that a legitimate government has been formed to manage the liberation struggle of Bangladesh. In the course of which, the People's Republic of Bangladesh government was established by formally taking oath in Mujibnagar on the morning of April 17.
Before this, the father of the nation, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, declared the independence of Bangladesh on March 26 before his arrest after the brutal attack on unarmed Bengalis by the Pakistani invading forces on the night of March 25, 1971. The establishment of Bangladesh as a sovereign People's Republic was officially announced on 10 April.
Along with this, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman's declaration of independence on 26th March was strongly supported and approved by the Government-in-Exile Ordinance.
Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman was elected President and Syed Nazrul Islam Vice-President (Provisional President). Syed Nazrul Islam then elected Tajuddin Ahmad as the Prime Minister.
Other members of the cabinet are: M Mansoor Ali (Finance, Commerce and Industry) and AHM Kamaruzzaman (Home, Supplies, Relief, Rehabilitation and Agriculture). Later, Khandaker Mushtaq Ahmad (Foreign Affairs, Law and Parliament), the most hated person in Bangabandhu's cabinet, also became a member of the cabinet.
General Ataul Ghani Osmani was appointed the Commander-in-Chief of the Mukti Bahini of the Provisional Government and Major General Abdur Rab as Chief of Staff.
The Mujibnagar government is divided into 15 ministries and departments. Apart from this, some departments remain under the authority of the Cabinet. The Ministry of Defense divides the combat zone into 11 sectors, each assigned a sector commander. However, there was no sector commander in No. 10 or Naval Sector. Commandos were under the command of sector commanders when they were operating in the area.
On April 17, 1971, Abdul Mannan MNA conducted the swearing-in ceremony at the border village of Meherpur and Professor Yusuf Ali MNA read the Declaration of Independence. A guard of honor was also given to Syed Nazrul Islam, the interim president of the newly formed government.
The swearing-in ceremony of the Mujibnagar government began with the recitation of the Holy Quran. The Holy Quran was recited by the 17-year-old boy Md. Baker Ali.
On April 17, 1971, the ministers of the Mujibnagar government took oath, but in the first meeting of the cabinet on April 18, the offices of the ministers were distributed. Independence sovereign Bangladesh was born on December 16, 1971 through the successful leadership of the Mujibnagar government and the victory of Bangladesh through the 9-month armed liberation war.
