The Dhaka Times Desk Saifullah Parcha, a Pakistani citizen, was imprisoned in the Guantanamo Bay prison in the United States for 18 years. He arrived in Pakistan yesterday Saturday (October 29).
He was released from a US military prison after many years. The Pakistan-based media outlet Dawn reported this information citing the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Pakistan.
Saifullah Parcha, 75, was the longest-serving prisoner at Guantanamo Bay, Dawn reported. He was detained on suspicion of having links with Al-Qaeda.
However, no strong evidence of the crime was found against him. His release was approved in May 2021. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Pakistan said that they are happy that a Pakistani national detained abroad has finally been reunited with his family.
It is known that Saifullah Parcha was a large-scale businessman in Pakistan. He lived in the United States. He also owned properties in New York. The United States seized Parcha from Thailand in 2003. He has been detained at Guantanamo since September 2004.
The United States opened the Guantanamo Bay prison in Cuba on January 11, 2002, after the 9/11 attacks. In the name of the so-called war on terror, the then US administration launched military operations in various countries, where people arrested were thrown into these prisons.
Human rights observers say US military authorities have held foreign prisoners of war in these notorious prisons for years without facing any kind of formal law or trial.
