The Dhaka Times Desk As there were forebodings and apprehensions; Cyclone 'Mokha' did not hit the territory of Bangladesh as strongly as it changed course. However, only a small part of the coast was touched - several areas, including St. Martin and Teknaf, were flooded.
More than a thousand houses have been destroyed by Mokha. Hundreds of trees and power poles were uprooted. Maheshkhali's LNG terminal has been heavily damaged. Part of Saint Martin is submerged under water. Many people were injured in these incidents. They are being treated in different hospitals. On the other hand, 2 people including a woman have been reported dead. However, the district administration, district police and tourist police could not confirm the death till the time of writing this report. Also, the concerned could not give any specific information about the exact amount of damage. Areas of Saint Martin, Shahpari Island, Teknaf, Ukhia, Maheshkhali and Qutubdia were the worst hit by Cyclone Mokha.
Due to the fear that strong cyclone Mokha may wreak havoc in Cox's Bazar, the number 10 emergency signal is shown. However, with the passage of time, the Mokha became weaker and turned towards Myanmar, so the Mokha did not have any impact on the Cox's Bazar beach. About 250,000 people were evacuated to more than 700 shelters by the district administration. Strict measures have been taken to curb the enthusiasm on the beach.
However, the isolated island of Cox's Bazar and the coastal upazila Teknaf area have been destroyed by the powerful Cyclone Moka. Part of Saint Martin is floating in sea water. Various infrastructures including houses, trees, electricity poles were uprooted there. 2 men and women are reported to have been killed by falling trees in Saint Martin. Many were injured there.
According to media sources, the wind speed is very high in St. Martin at the moment. Many houses were blown away by this cyclone. No chance to go out due to hostile environment. Electricity poles were also broken. About 5,000 people have stayed in 37 shelters on the island to protect their lives.
