The study looked at 5,000 people who presented to hospital with suspected symptoms of cancer in England and Wales. Cancer was accurately detected in 2 out of every 3 of them through this test. Researchers believe that this test can also give good results in cases of cancer that need to be detected quickly. In particular, head, neck, bowel, lung, pancreas and throat cancers.
Tests that detect different cancers together are called 'gallery tests'. California company Grail invented this gallery test. The NHS is currently running the test on thousands of people with no cancer symptoms to see if it can detect latent cancer. The preliminary results of this study may come next year. If successful, the UK Department of Health is considering carrying out the study on another million people in 2024 and 2025.
