The Dhaka Times Desk Prominent journalist, former editor of The Independent newspaper and former advisor to caretaker government Mahbubul Alam (78) passed away yesterday at 9.25 am at Bardem Hospital in the capital (Innalillahi…..wa…rajiun). He was suffering from senility.
The death of Mahbubul Alam has cast a shadow of mourning across the world. As his physical condition deteriorated, he was placed on life support in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of Bardem Hospital on Thursday.
Mahbubul Alam retired on October 19 last year after serving as the editor of The Independent newspaper for 18 years. He was then appointed as an advisor to the Beximco Group. Mahbubul Alam was also Managing Director and Editor-in-Chief of Bangladesh News Agency (BASS). In 2007, he served as Information Advisor to the Caretaker Government led by Yazuddin Ahmed.
Mahbubul Alam is survived by his wife and three daughters. They are currently in the United States. They are scheduled to return to their country today. Yesterday afternoon, Mahbubul Alam's body was first taken to his younger brother's house in Gulshan. His first prayer was held at Azad Mosque in Gulshan after Asr. His second prayer was held at his longtime workplace, Independent Office. His third Namaz prayer will be held at the National Press Club after Bad Zohar today. He will be buried in his father's grave at Azimpur Gorastan after his wife and 3 daughters who are staying abroad return home. It has been informed that Mahbubul Alam's kulkhani will be held at Gulshan-2 (Road-48, House 10/B) at his younger brother's house next Monday.

Brief Biography:
Veteran journalist Mahbubul Alam was born on February 5, 1936 in Banyal village of Banglabazar union near Padma river in Munshiganj Sadar upazila. He received his master's degree from the Department of Political Science of Dhaka University. He began his journalism career in 1953 with the Associates Press of Pakistan (APP). Later in his career he was the editor of New Nation, a weekly dialogue. After independence, he served as the press secretary of Prime Minister Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman for some time. After that, he worked for a long time in the message department of London High Commission and Washington Embassy. H. M. During Ershad's regime, Mahbubul Alam was the Director General of the External Affairs Department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. He then served as the Chief Editor and Managing Director of the national news agency Bass. He also served as Ambassador of Bhutan. This veteran journalist Mahbubul Alam was awarded various awards including Atish Dipankar Gold Medal during his career.
