According to ancient Japanese belief, the spirits of the dead always roam this forest. When a living person comes here, these spirits influence him. It is heard that after the publication of two novels 'Lit' and 'Tower of Webs' by a Japanese writer named Seiko Matsumoto in 1960, the tendency of suicide among local people has increased. The reason for this is that two characters of this novel committed suicide after coming to this forest for the good wishes of family and children.

According to media reports, a strange custom called 'Ubasute' is being celebrated in this area in the 19th century. According to this custom, the family members of the dying old women came and left them in this forest. Then they died here. Many locals still believe that the spirits of dead old women still roam here.

According to an information, from 1988 until now, an average of 100 people have committed suicide in this forest every year. In 2002, 78 dead bodies were found in this forest. In 2003 this number increased to 100. In 2004 this number increased to 108. Since then, the local administration has stopped publishing the death toll. It is believed that the reason for this is that due to the publication of these numbers, the tendency of suicide among people may increase. So the matter of suicide is kept secret.
