The Dhaka Times Desk Bangladeshi volunteer Sharmin Sultana received the 61st Commonwealth Point of Light Award. On July 19, the British Queen Elizabeth II announced the award as the head of the Commonwealth. He was conferred with this award in recognition of his outstanding contribution to the humanitarian assistance program for the Rohingya refugees.
Sharmin Sultana will receive a certificate signed by the British Queen as the Head of the Commonwealth. Alison Blake, the British High Commissioner in Bangladesh, will officially hand over the award to him. Sharmin works to prevent unwanted pregnancies, safe terminations, provide essential maternity and postnatal services and create awareness among Rohingya women and girls at the Kutupalong refugee camp in Cox's Bazar. Because most Rohingya women are ignorant about pregnancy and postnatal care. The rate of early pregnancy is high especially among girls. As a result, they are not very conscious about their health.
Sharmin works here at Mukti, a public health and service delivery NGO. He also trained paramedics, midwives and doctors in Rohingya camps to provide maximum services to Rohingya women and girls. On hearing about the award, Sharmin said, "I was speechless when I got the news." He also said, "This award is not only for me but also for Mukti, our private organization serving the Rohingyas. I am proud to receive this award.”
British High Commissioner Alison Blake congratulated Sharmeen, saying she "deserved this award for her extraordinary work."
