The Dhaka Times Desk Bangladesh Jute Mills Corporation (BJMC) has entered into an agreement with a UK private company to start production of polyethylene (jutepoly) from jute on a commercial basis. A memorandum of understanding was signed on October 2 in the presence of Jute Ministry State Minister Mirza Azam and Jute Ministry Senior Secretary Faizur Rahman Chowdhury.
In the MoU signing ceremony held at the meeting room of Jute Ministry, Secretary of BJMC AKM Tarek and General Manager of the company Premi Coulhard signed the MoU on behalf of UK private company Futamura Chemical. At this time, the chairman of BGMC. Md. Mahamudul Hasan and the inventor of making polyethylene from jute. Mubarak Hossain was present.
At the contract signing ceremony, Mirza Azam said, 'In the next 6 to 9 months, commercial production of polyethylene from jute will start. Initially the cost of these polythene bags will be slightly higher than normal polythene. But if the production increases, the price will be adjusted.
Dr. Mubarak Ahmad Khan said, to prevent the use of polythene made of polyelastic, which is harmful to the environment, the initiative to produce jute polymer has been taken on the instructions of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. Jute polymer is being produced at Latif Bawani Jute Mill in Demra of the capital. Several thousand bags have already been produced, which are being sold at trade fairs. He said, there is a huge demand for jute polymer in the country and abroad. He also expects export orders to come from the fair. Mubarak Ahmad said, polythene is causing various damages due to non-decomposability. Considering these aspects, jute polymer is now being made. The polymer bag will mix with the soil in two to six months. It is more durable and can carry more loads than plastic polybags.
Mobarak Hossain, the inventor of making polyethylene from jute, said, 'This golden bag is eco-friendly and capable of re-production.'
