Paulinho's late goal on Wednesday night earned Brazil a place in the Confederations Cup final with a 2-1 win over Uruguay. The match, however, was not at all breathtaking. Brazil are under pressure from the expectations of a gallery full of home fans. Brazil gave Uruguay a penalty in 14 minutes of the first half. Selecao's center half David Luiz brought down Uruguay's Diego Lugano in the box, giving Uruguay an easy chance to go ahead early on. But Uruguayan star Forlan's low penalty shot was saved by Brazilian goalkeeper Julio Cesar, as the crowd erupted into cheers.
Shortly before the break, however, Brazil got the first goal. In the 41st minute, Paulinho sent the ball to Neymar with a great chip over the Uruguayan defense, Neymar controlled the ball with his chest and took a shot at the goal. Uruguayan keeper Fernando Muslera pounced to block the ball, but the last save was not made, as Fred, who was nearby, curled the ball into the net with a powerful shot.
At the beginning of the second half, Uruguay equalized by paying that goal in 3 minutes. Brazil's defense let the ball slip to Cavani's feet, the Uruguayan striker beat César with a low shot and curled the ball into the left side of the net.
Both sides then battled to advance, but neither looked successful. In the 66th minute, Cesar jumped up and blocked Luis Suarez's excellent header. Two minutes later, Neymar dribbled in brilliantly and passed the ball to Fred, who was alone at the head of the box, but his shot went over the bar.
Finally, in the 86th minute, the match saw a goal again. Paulinho's header from Neymar's corner at the back post saw Muslera beat Brazil to advance to the final. Then the Uruguayans could not repay that goal in 5 minutes with extra time.
Brazil will face the winner of today's match between Spain and Italy in the final on Sunday.
