According to media reports, US National Security Advisor John Bolton and US President Donald Trump's son-in-law Jared Kushner spoke to bin Salman on the phone.
Later, US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo spoke to Saudi King Salman on the phone about the issue.
The White House said both conversations sought a detailed explanation of Khashoggi's disappearance. The Saudi government is asked to ensure transparency in the investigation of this incident. White House spokeswoman Sarah Sanders said Washington was watching closely to see what happened to the missing journalist.
