হারিয়ে যাওয়া দু’টি মসজিদের কথা 1

There are many mosques in Bangladesh. There are also many historic mosques that have been renovated in later times to maintain their heritage. But today there are two mosques that are said to have been lost.

Shanmandi Union of Narayanganj. The river Brahmaputra meanders through this village. During the Mughal period, this river was the lifeblood of this village, but even though it has become a bit muddy, its character has not changed. According to Bangladesh Asiatic Society's book 'Sonargaon-Panam', there are two mosques of Mughal period in this union.

The Asiatic Society book mentions that this mosque first came to notice during the fieldwork of Fakir Farooq and Hasan Saimum. After observing the architecture and design of the mosque, they judged that this mosque was built in the seventeenth or eighteenth century.

In the book published in 1999, it was written that this mosque has been renovated and enlarged several times. Except for the doors on the north and south sides and the verandah on the other three sides. But most of the renovation work of this mosque was done during 1945. The mosque is being used as a Jama Masjid and is managed by a Madrasah Committee.

This square mosque was topped by a dome, with 4 octagonal corner towers. Although the original space was 2.25 square meters inside, plastering, painting and other alterations did not maintain the original measurements. In the original design only the entrance was on the eastern wall. Painted on the inner arch, hanging designs on the dome. There was arrangement for 6 people to pray together inside. On the west wall opposite the main entrance there were 3 arches, the central one being large and the two sides relatively small. It is mentioned that the northern mehrab was used as a closet. The outer walls are decorated with plaster and limewashed and lined rectangular panels in the Mughal style. The dome of this mosque was semi-circular, decorated with designs of lotuses and urns and cornices lined with lotus petals.

Another mosque is Darikandi Mosque. The location of this mosque is on the bank of a lowland. Outside is the ablutions, a one-story building with no frills. The interior is covered in white tiles. But the arch is also new. The elder of the madrasa next to him said that this is the Darikandi mosque. This mosque was rebuilt in 2002-03 under the auspices of Madrasa. But what happened to the original building? This building has been completely demolished and completely rebuilt. Some costs are also covered by selling the earlier bricks locally.

Earlier the mosque could accommodate only 6 people, now there are 50-60 people. Like Darikandi, no dome or minaret has been installed in this mosque, no one has thought about future expansion. Where the mosque was supposed to be expanded in a more magnificent manner by maintaining the past traditions, the two traditional mosques have become silent and lost.
