The Dhaka Times Desk Mushfiqur Rahim has criticized BCB's decision to appoint him as captain for a short period of time. According to him, the decision will affect future captains apart from putting him at a disadvantage in setting targets. Earlier on Wednesday, BCB decided to keep Mushfiq as the captain till the end of this year, which means that he is the captain only for the next New Zealand series starting in October. Apart from this, Bangladesh cricket team has no other international games this year.
Mushfiqur said, “I think this is the only cricket nation where the captain is decided per series. Frankly, the job is very bad for a cricketer. If you don't know for sure how long you are the captain for, it becomes difficult for you to set goals. So similarly, it's difficult for a captain to run a series like this. And that's not just about me, it's about any future captain. "
He added, “The board is not thinking long-term, so it doesn't matter whether I think long-term or not. There will be only one series in these five months. I will give my 100% as a captain and as a player and make sure the rest of the team does the same."
BCB chief Nazmul Hasan Papon persuaded Mushfiqur to remain as captain through negotiations after he resigned after the tour of Zimbabwe in May. But there was no discussion about how long it will last.
However, this is not the first time that the board has given the captaincy over the series. With Shakib Al Hasan, the board has repeatedly given the captaincy for a series, due to which he was almost going to resign in 2010. Later, however, he was given the responsibility of captaincy for one more year.
After Shakib was sacked from that position in mid-2011, Mushfiqur was initially given the captaincy for the two series of that year. After that, he was given responsibility till the 2013 tour of Zimbabwe, but the board has now returned to the policy of giving captaincy for a series.
It is believed that Mushfiqur will be asked to continue in charge after the New Zealand series. Like Shakib, however, he is not going to get involved in a dispute with the board about this, "I will never be able to talk to the board about this (captaincy until the 2015 World Cup). If the board thinks I'm good enough to be captain, they can let me know. Whether I will take that responsibility then is another matter……… captaincy should be given for the long term for the good of Bangladesh cricket. Hopefully that will happen in the near future.”
