Recently, the island nation has come to a standstill after a series of bomb attacks on churches and luxury hotels in various cities including the capital Colombo.
253 people were killed in the bombing on April 21. More than 500 people were injured. Several foreign tourists were also among the casualties. Several countries issued travel warnings to Sri Lanka for their citizens. This has had a major impact on the tourism industry of the island, known as a 'tropical paradise', leaving traders in the sector in limbo.
According to media reports, 5 percent of the country's GDP is generated from the tourism sector alone. However, due to this terrible attack, there has been a massive collapse in the country's tourism industry.
Although the country is visited by tourists throughout the year, a different picture was seen immediately after the attack. A number of countries have also issued new travel warnings for citizens staying in Sri Lanka. Due to which tourists have canceled hotel and flight bookings due to the fear of further attacks.
Sri Lankan President Maithripala Sirisena described the disaster for the country's economy and tourism industry. Recently, he said in an interview, "To save the country's economy, it has become necessary to bring the tourism sector back to its former position."
