Eyewitnesses said that around 10:30 am on Wednesday, hundreds of job seekers blocked Shahbag intersection. Later many more job seekers joined the blockade. The blockade is still ongoing. Due to the blockade, all types of traffic through the Shahbagh intersection are closed. The blockaders said they would not lift the blockade until the demands were met.
The 34th BCS was advertised on February 7 to recruit a total of 2,52 posts, including 442 general cadre posts. Two lakh 21 thousand 575 candidates applied online for this exam. The preliminary examination was held on May 24. One lakh 95 thousand examinees participated in it. The results of this exam were published last Monday and a total of 12 thousand 33 people passed.
So far the quota system was applied at the final stage after the preliminary, written and oral exams. But quota system has been implemented since the preliminary stage of 34th BCS. There is a fear that a large part of talented people will be deprived of government job opportunities in the beginning.
Job aspirants complain that as a result, many will be selected for the written exam in the freedom fighters, tribals and women quota despite getting low marks. And despite getting relatively high marks, many people outside this quota will be deprived of the opportunity.
In a circular sent to the newspaper, the aggrieved candidates complained that their friends who had applied for the freedom fighter and tribal quota had passed with 60 to 65 marks. And could not pass despite getting 75 to 78 marks in merit quota.
However, the Public Service Commission (PSC) claimed the students' complaints as baseless and said that even if the quota is fixed from the preliminary, the meritorious students will not be affected in any way.
